Environmental groups express support for the measures restricting motorized traffic in the historic center of Palma

12 june 2016

The environmental organizations Amics de la Terra, Ecologists in Action (Ecologistas in Acción) and GOB, the organization of urban cyclists Biciutat de Mallorca, and the state forum of pedestrians “Walking” (“Andando”) adhere to the measures agreed upon by the Palma City Council, which are aimed at restricting motorized traffic in the historic center of the city.

In the opinion of these organizations, the measures will result in an increase in the quality of life of the citizens of Palma through the very desirable calming of traffic, an increase in pedestrian safety and the portrayal of a proper image of the city to its visitors.

The tendency to cut down on center-city traffic for pedestrians, vehicles of essential services and residents of the historical center of European cities is a trend that is increasingly extending in response to citizen demands. People have realized that the presence of a car is a serious obstacle for enjoying the streets that would not only be used for walking, but would also be used for socializing and simply being in them, especially in cities of Mediterranean culture like Palma.

The recent “Report on the air quality in the Spanish State in 2015” “Informe sobre la calidad del aire en el Estado español durante 2015”, published by Ecologists in Action emphasizes that in the Balearic Islands there are contamination levels well above the reccomendations suggested by the World Health Organization. The undersigned organizations are convinced that the measures taken in Palma will help to reduce them.
