(As you know, Amics de la Terra is part of the Alliance Mar Blava)
25 July 2016
After the Alliance Mar Blava had called on the Ministry of Agricultura, Food and the Environment (MAGRAMA), the governmental body has proceeded to close the file on the record of the oil exploration project promoted by the Schlumberger Petroleum Services in the Gulf of Léon.
Indeed, after the submission of file closure of the mentioned record that the Alliance Mar Blava made in the middle of June, the General Directorate of Environmental Quality and Assessment and Natural Environment (DGCEAMN) of MAGRAMA, and the Secretary of State of the Environment of MAGRAMA, Pablo Saavedra, signed the Resolution of Termination of the record 20140045PHC on 8 July 2016 on the project of “seismic campaign in free areas of the Gulf of Léon off of the coasts of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands”. This project was promoted by Schlumberger Petroleum Services, Spanish Branch (document reference number SGEA/AJR/mllr/20140045), and the decision was communicated the same day to the substantive body (Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism) and to the promoter.
For the Alliance Mar Blava, this new achievement is a significant step towards the ultimate goal of reaching a Mediterranean that is free of hydrocarbon exploration. This is also a new victory for all of society and its institutions against such projects currently ongoing in the sea, especially after the achievement in 2015 against the petroleum company Cairn Energy in the Gulf of Valencia, in which the company was forced to give up its purpose due to outright social and institutional opposition to their project.
